The Janet Fischer Memorial Lecture was given on January 4 by Dr. Lynne Mofenson, MD, NICHD.  Dr. Fischer (1923-2007) was a valued and beloved member of the UNC ID community, and her legacy lives on.



  UNC Fellow receives award
Jonathon Juliano has received the 2007 IDSA ERF/NFID Merle A. Sande/Pfizer Fellowship in International Infectious Diseases Award. It a one year post-doctoral fellowship sponsored by the Infectious Disease Society of America Education and Research Foundation (IDSA ERF), National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and Pfizer. The award is in honor of Dr. Merle A. Sande. It is intended to encourage young physicians interested in international medicine and is given for important research in infectious diseases conducted in resource-limited settings. It pays for salary, travel and research expenses of up to $60,000 for the one year period. The project involves development and implementation of new methods for detecting drug resistant malaria.


  National Disease Research Interchange: Human HIV+ Tissue for Research
The National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI) is a well established, NIH supported, non-profit organization dedicated to providing scientists with human tissues for biomedical research. With the support of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), NDRI has initiated the HIV Research Program, which aims to increase availability of human tissues from HIV+ donors for pre-clinical and basic research.

Since the program's inception five years ago, NDRI has procured nearly 700 tissues from HIV+ donors (both symptomatic and asymptomatic) and distributed them to our affiliated researchers.
